Use the inside jaws to measure the diameter of one of the holes. Before you remove the caliper from the hole, press the button to zero the caliper while it is set to the diameter of the hole.

Still using the inside jaws, measure the distance between the far surfaces of the two holes. The caliper reading is the distance between centers of the two holes.

Drilling a hole through the center of a ball is difficult without a guide, since there are no flat sides for reference to locate the center or keep the drill aimed straight. A ball-drilling jig solves the problem. You can make one from a few scrap pieces of wood and four bolts. The jig holds a ball securely beneath a drill press and indicates where to align the bit to drill through the center of the ball. Mark the center of the 6 x 6 wood by drawing an X from corner to corner.

This permanent mark will be used to align your drill in the center of the ball. Drill a hole in the center of each piece of wood. The diameter of the hole depends on the diameter of the ball. Place the two pieces of wood on top of each other with the holes aligned.

Counter-sink the holes on the bottom board so the bolt heads won't protrude. Run the bolts up through the bottom board and out the top board.

Place the washers on the ends and screw on the wingnuts. Separate the two pieces of wood by sliding the top one up the bolts. Place the ball between them, resting in the holes. Fasten the wingnuts until the ball is clamped securely.

Lay a straight edge along each line of the "X" and mark each line on the top of the ball, which will show through the hole. The spot where the lines intersect indicates the center of the ball. Place the sandwich of wood and ball on the table of a drill press. Insert the bit you want to use for the center hole and align it perpendicular to the table.

Start at the mark where the two lines of the "X" crossed. When you drill straight down, you'll be drilling a hole through the exact center of the ball. Make the larger piece of wood the same size as your drill-press table so it's easy to clamp in place. David Thompson. Pin Share Tweet Share Email.

Thank you for your cooperation.Having some materials on hand like copper tubing for the cylinder and some solid aluminum rod for the piston, I agreed to make the parts. He had tried to make the hole with his drill press, but ran into a problem where the hole he drilled was not centered.

This became apparent only after the hole was finished, of course, as it exited the far end of the bolt off center. I had an idea about a procedure for drilling an accurate center hole in a cylindrical part with a drill press by first aligning a drill vice to hold a drill bit stationary while using the drill chuck to grip and spin the work piece.

But it also has a very nice feature when a drill chuck is inserted in the tailstock, and that is to accurately drill a hole precisely down the center of the part. An example of that is shown below. Normally, you would use something called a center drill to start the hole and then swap it out for the drill of the proper diameter. If the hole is large, you may have to drill with several drill sizes to get it up to the finished diameter.

In this case, the hole I wanted to make was just. The procedure I describe below would need to be modified by resetting the alignment for each drill if you need to open the hole up in several steps. First, you put a drill of the desired diameter in the drill chuck and tighten it.

Then gently raise the drill table, clamp the table to set its height, and then and move the drill vise to the bit and clamp the drill vice down on the bit. This is important for a subsequent step.

Then clamp the workpiece in the drill chuck. Then turn the drill on. Just like on the lathe, the drill bit will be stationary and you can lower the spindle with workpiece and it will drill the hole accurately through the center of the part.

Remember to lift up on the spindle periodically to clear out the metal chips. In my case, the hole was within. This is amazing. This trick is definitely going to be helpful in my DIY projects. I really liked your post.Either way the quick trick works, and will hopefully save a lot of hackers some headaches in the future. A nice creative alternative to having a lathe.

The process should work fine if the process is reversed, ie clamp the piece to be drilled in the chuck and transfer it to the vice. The drill bit can thus be used in the the standard way. They are in fact exact opposites. This does nothing to center the hole, but it does drill a very nice, perfectly straight hole, which is the point of drill bits.

This is the whole point of lathes, and why you can do perfectly symmetrical work on a lathe.

DRILLED HEAD BOLTS.COM

Seriously, watch normal lathe work with someone working on the end rather than the side. What this means is as long as your bit is reasonably close to center, you will always drill a perfectly centered hole. Phil The chuck can hold delicate pieces in a much more stable manner than the vice, and with more contact points. Holding a delicate piece that is being hollowed out by the drill bit with the vice will inevitably lead to distortion.

Additionally, placing the rod in the chuck rather than the vice allows you to do multiples without having to reset after each piece. Machinists have done this for the past 60, years. I can drill centered holes in bolts using my eyeballs and a decent drill press or vertical mill. This is a good post. Everybody is a noob at something. I drilled a lot of holes, but probably not a single straight one. Once upon a time, you did not know about this. You probably had someone introduce you to the Advanced Machine Work book too.

And for posting such noob things, I thank you. Because now I also know. Or should I have already known about that too? Yep, machining is not new to me but the Machinist Book reference is… Thank you for the link. First, hand sharpened drill bits do not drill straight.

They chatter. The holes they make will be out of round and off center. Sharpening the flutes symmetrically and with proper angles requires specializes jigs or highly configurable grinders like the beauty recently featured on Hack A Day.

Second, even a bit that is sharp and true will tend to wander than starting a hole. Machinists who need accuracy start their holes with either spotting drills or center drills.

Broken Tap Removal by Metal Disintegration Machine (MDM)

A table top lathe makes this chore a breeze tighten stock in 3-jaw chuck, drilland opens up a world of possibilities. Count me among the rest for thanks.

On the physics comment, while true the chuck has its place, it becomes much more center because it is the object instead of the bit in the drill.
